The village is perched next to the picturesque Pyrenees Mountains, in Navarra, northern Spain. Roncesvalles is known for the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778, during the reign of Charlemange. Roland was a commander Knight of the Frankish Army, who was the nephew of Charlemange. Charlemange suffered a great defeat from the Basque Army, and the bravest nephew killed. There was a beautiful poem written in remembrance of Roland, called the Song of Roland. A small village with great history!
This is where the Franks are burried, it’s a 12th-century chapel and cemetery.
