CAMINO LOURDES FRANCE

My journey begins in the tireless town of Lourdes, nestled in the scenic foothills of the Pyrenees in southern France.
Renowned for a miraculous event that transpired in 1858, when the Virgin Mary appeared to a humble young girl named Bernadette Soubirous, Lourdes is a destination steeped in spirituality and wonder. One of the most symbolic aspects of Lourdes is its healing waters, which have reached fame far and wide. Over the years, the church has meticulously investigated and authenticated an impressive number of sixty-eight remarkable cures. It is worth noting that faith knows no denominational boundaries, and people from all walks of life can embrace the spiritual essence of this sacred place. I highly recommend a visit to the Grotto of Massabielle, where you. can partake in the transformative experience of being immersed in the invigorating cold frigid water. It is truly a real and awakening experience that I encourage you to embrace.

Before embarking on your Camino pilgrimage from Lourdes, it is essential to make a pit stop at the Office of Tourism. This is where you can obtain your credentials and receive your Camino Passport, which is a crucial document for pilgrims. To collect your credentials, be sure to bring your valid passport with you, as it will be required to verify your identity. The Camino Passport (also known as the Credential or Pilgrim Credential) is an important document that allows you to officially record your journey along the Camino de Santiago. It serves as proof of pilgrimage and grants you access to various accommodations.

Make sure you have an amply supply of water to keep yourself hydrated as you set off from Lourdes. I used a two-liter hydration pack and an eight ounce bottle water. I strongly advise against passing up any opportunities to replenish your water supply. Lourdes has the best water so fill up, and it’s free!

Saint-Jean-Pied-De-Port, Pied de Port derives its name from its location at the “foot of the pass”. As you can see, my trusty boots will be retiring after I complete the final leg of this challenging hike over the Pyrenees tomorrow! These boots have served me well over the past three years, accompanying me on numerous fantastic hiking adventures. They are the Hanna Women’s Lady GXT hiking trekking boots- an exceptional choice for hiking enthusiasts.

Here are two routes you can take; over the Pyrenees Mountains or taking the Valcarlos Route, which winds down in between the peaks. I chose to venture over the Pyrenees, enticed by the allure of the challenging terrain and the breathtaking scenery that awaited me.

Along the Camino, you’ll come across many stone piles, each with its own significance. Personally, when encountering these piles, I would. reflect upon the burdens, wether personal or that of others, that weigh heavy on my heart. I’d offer prayers entrusting these burdens to God and seeking His guidance. When the time felt right, I would leave my own rock among the collection, symbolically surrendering the burden and allowing God to relieve me from its weight. The size of the rock can vary, much like the weight of our backpacks. Sometimes, we hold onto material possessions, hesitant to let go despite the heaviness they add to our journey. We continue carrying the weight on our shoulders, perhaps due to pride or ego, until we reach a breaking point. It is essential to recognize that in real life, we carry burdens in our hearts and minds, and seeking help, support and prayer can provide the release we need. Just as we let go of the physical weight on the Camino, we can also let go of our burdens, trusting in God’s strength and grace!
Along the beautiful Pyrenees mountain range, you will come across huts called Refugios. These shelters serve as safe havens in times of emergency or need. They are a comforting presence amidst the stunning surroundings.
I am immersing myself in the breathtaking landscape.
I opted to halt my journey at the welcoming Orisson Hostel, where I indulged in a delicious lunch and took a much needed restroom break. However, after learning about the impending rain forecast for the following day, I made the difficult decision to cancel my reservation for the night at Orisson. I certainly did not want to embark on a rain-soaked hiked through the magnificent Pyrenees. Instead, I resolved to push forward determined to reach the charming town of Roncevelles. With favorable weather conditions and not a drop of rain in sight, I eagerly embarked on the 16-Kilometer hike from Orisson to Roncevelles.

Here lies the pinnacle of the Pyrenees mountain range, reaching an impressive altitude of 1200 meters. This lofty summit stands as a testament to the awe-inspiring heights and majestic beauty that the Pyrenees has to offer.
Allow me to introduce Pei Pei, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at my hostel. Together, we embarked on the exhilarating Camino journey up the Pyrenees. Along our path, we crossed paths with Terry, a fellow traveler hailing from the UK. With newfound companionship, we embraced the spirit of the Camino, wishing each other a heartfelt “Buen Camino” as we continued our shared adventure.
FONTAINE dE ROLAND also known as the Roncevaux Fountain, is an intriguing landmark located between the Pyrenees of Orisson and Roncesvalles. The fountain holds significant historical and mythical value. According to legend, it is associated with Roland, a valiant knight from the medieval epic ” The Song of Roland.” The fountain is said to mark the spot where Roland, one of Charlemagne’s legendary paladins, wielded his mighty sword Durendal, and struck a boulder with such force that it split in two. It is mentioned in various versions of Roland legend and has become a symbolic reference to Roland’s heroic strength.
As my Camino nears its end, I am about to cross on a significant milestone-crossing, the border signifies the transition from one country France to another and serves as a symbolic moment on my journey, as I prepare to enter Spain!
When descending the mountain, you are presented with two options: a heavily wooded path on the left, which is remarkable steep, and a longer more gentle road on the right. In 2016, I bravely chose the wooded path while following the arrow directing to Roncevalles. As I recall, the path proved to be challenging. If rainy or muddy conditions I strongly advise against taking this route. However, if the weather is dry, it is still possible to navigate this path by proceeding with caution and taking your time. On my second Camino journey, I opted for the less strenuous but longer route around the mountain. This alternate path served as a more manageable option.
Important to remember!
Made it down the mountain.
As we make our way towards, the hostel, anticipation fills the air for the comforting embrace of a warm invigorating shower. The prospect of a delicious meal, accompanied by a glass of vino promises to satisfy our hunger and rejuvenate our spirits. The hostel beckons, offering a haven of relaxation and rejuvenation after a challenging day on the Camion.
